Character Biography

David Barlow is one of the original characters from Coronation Street, appearing in the first episode dated 9 December 1960. David was the younger brother of Ken Barlow. David was an apprentice engineer, but the thing he loved most of all was football.

In 1961, he was offered a contract when a scout saw how good he was at football and that he had a real talent. David did return to Weatherfield for his mother's funeral in September 1961 (off-screen, he watched it from the distance).

David returned to the street in 1963, and then in 1964 when he was disqualified pending further investigation (he was accused of taking a bribe). So he went to live with Ken and his wife Valerie. He was later cleared, but he remained in Weatherfield to write for a magazine about football.

David began dating Irma Ogden in 1965 (who was also the daughter of Hilda and Stan Ogden) and they later married. David suffered a serious injury, which led him to possibly not playing football again. But he was later cured and could play again.

In 1968, David was offered a contract to play in Australia and live there. When Irma didnt like the idea, she later found out she was pregnant (they had a miscarriage in the past) and she was delighted, and they decided it would be a great new life for them and their baby.

They moved away from Weatherfield to immigrate to Australia where they lived a new life. Irma also gave birth to their son Darren.

Sadly however in 1970, David, Irma and Darren where involved in a car crash. David and Darren died in the crash but Irma survived. Ken didnt go to his brother's funeral, as he thought it wasnt worth the money to go all the way to Austrialia just to see him buried. Irma's mother Hilda went over and later brought her back.
